Usually it is a drawback for us that we aren’t native English speakers: it takes more time to write texts for our website, our blog and press releases and I’m sure the resulting texts aren’t as good as texts from native English speakers. Another disadvantage is that we aren’t so confident about our spoken English when it comes to phone calls.
But being native German speakers as we are has some advantages, too. We can give better support to our German customers and can effectively target the German market. We currently don’t have a German version of SmartInspect and I guess that it will stay this way for quite some time, but just being able to speak German to press representatives and customers gives us an advantage over non-German speaking vendors in the local market.
After noticing a posting in Joel’s Business of Software forum, we had the idea of offering a translation service for software products. As we are native German speakers, have a good knowledge of English and have the technical skills to help with the integration of the translation into customers’ software, we are now launching Gurock Translations.
Under the new service name Gurock Translations, we will translate and localize English software to German. Our service includes translation of graphical user interfaces, documentation, company and product websites and other marketing related materials. We hope to get some translation and localization work to support our ISV activities and make us a bit more flexible when it comes to advertisement campaigns for our products.
