Until now, the free VMware Server was only available as a beta, but today VMware Inc. finally released the 1.0 of the product. This makes it possible for ISVs to save money and time by hosting multiple servers on one physical machine and start/stop/control the servers remotely. We have been waiting for the final release and can now start converting our servers to virtual ones.

Hey Dennis, how are you going with this? I’ve got a Dell 2650 with dual procs and have just installed VMWare Server on CentOS. I’m looking to run three webserver VM’s (Debian/Apache etc), Windows (AD & Exchange) plus an Astaro VM Appliance for secuirty… 5 VM’s too much? I guess I’ll find out… how’s your performance looking?
Cheers,
Matt
Hi Matt,
Thanks for your comment. I’m going to post an update on our VMware Server setup in the next days as I’m currently a bit busy, but in short I can say that the performance of our setup is really great (Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) and we can easily handle 5 production VMs and still have enough room for more. Your mileage may vary as this probably depends a lot on how many users you have, but we are very happy about our switch to VMware.
