New DelphiFeeds.com Beta now online

We are very happy to announce a new beta of DelphiFeeds.com! We designed and developed the new site to be a mix of Digg, Stack Overflow and the old DelphiFeeds.com, allowing you to vote for postings, marking items off-topic and saving the best postings as favorites.

df

Popular postings, i.e. postings with many votes, are promoted to the Popular section of the front-page of the new site and thus get more attention. Popular postings are also featured on the new Popular pages, which makes it easy to track the most popular postings over time.

The new sidebar and widgets allow you to configure which newsgroups and community resources you want to see, and in which order they are displayed. We will add additional newsgroup and feed widgets soon, so if you have any suggestion for additional feeds that should be included, please let us know.

You can now also stay up-to-date on Delphi news and Delphi blog postings via Twitter by following @delphifeeds. This isn’t really a new feature and the DF.com crawler has been twittering for a few months now, but we haven’t announced it yet. So if you missed this, make sure to follow @delphifeeds!

We also finally updated the Blog of the Year award and determined the winners. It took us (a lot!) longer than expected, but there were always more important things to do, so my apologies for the delay. Anyway, congratulations to the blog authors and winners of the prizes and thanks to the prize sponsors!

So if you haven’t yet, make sure to check out the new site and please provide feedback. If no major issues come up during the beta, we will switch to the new site next weekend.

I am not a fan of the new design. I dislike any site that only uses about 50% of my screen (1900×1200) . That said, it renders nicer on my blackberry than the current version.

Maybe if there was an option for fixed size and full size rendering of the content.

You could perhaps add the Delphi section of RefactorMyCode.com to the new site too. That could be just the thing to give the Delphi side of that site the kick along it needs right now.

Thanks for the work. Delphi Feeds is a great one-stop Delphi blogs agregator.

I would like an additional feature. Some easy overview where you could go several weeks backwards and re-find a blog posting that I remember having read. Perhaps some table overview where you can see a whole month of entries on one long page.

I know there is the “previous entries” but I would like a larger overview.

Thanks for the nice comments and feedback, we really appreciate it!

@Xepol: It’s a lot harder to design for a site with variable width and make sure that the site is still easy to read, so we have decided to go with a somewhat fixed size for the new version (the width is still flexible to some degree). We also use 1900×1200 screens, but usually do not have the browser window maximized. Don’t you find it hard to read text when the lines are very long?

@Isaam: we will discontinue the forum with the new site. We have found that Stack Overflow is a lot better for technical questions, and the Embarcadero newsgroups (which are also available via web now at http://forums.codegear.com/) are a lot better for non-technical discussions.

@Lachlan: I will make sure to add it as an available widget, but I’m not sure if we will display it on the sidebar by default.

@Rif: Thanks for the suggestion, that makes sense. Could you post the suggestion to http://delphifeeds.uservoice.com/ so that it’s considered for a future version? Thanks!

i don’t like new design because i don’t need the extra features (favorites, voting etc). With new design it’s harder to get quick overview.
I hope you keep the simple (old) interface also (a ‘la old.delphifeeds.com) because some of us like simple things :)

The old one does all that’s needed and packs more into less space.

The voting isn’t worth the lost screen space. An informative title tells me if I’m interested, anyway.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it I say.

I really like the new site which has a great contemporary look. Too often Delphi ressources have a feeling of having been made in times long gone… – Many thanks for your work!

@m. Unfortunately, we won’t be keeping the old site, as maintaining both sites would be too time-consuming (they don’t share the same database).

@Ken: I just compared the two sites, and I only see one more posting without scrolling on the old site compared to the new one (7 vs 6). It might look like there’s a lot less information on the site, because we made more use of whitespace, but it’s actually pretty much the same information.

    @Hans: Thanks a lot!

Hi Dennis, I really like the new design, congratulations!

BTW, do you use a Delphi technology to build the site?, WebBroker, Intraweb, or the like?

    Leonardo.

  14. Posted April 8, 2009 at 21:13 | Permalink

Leonardo: thanks a lot! The site isn’t built with Delphi and to be honest, I haven’t really used any Delphi technologies to build a real web app/site yet. I think Delphi is especially great for native Windows desktop and client/server applications, but there are better languages and frameworks for web apps out there IMHO. We’ve used PHP and the CodeIgniter framework to build the site (the old DelphiFeeds.com also used this combination).
