SmartInspect Price Changes

February 3rd, 2008 by Dennis Gurock

We have been taking a small hit on every SmartInspect USD sale in the past 10 or so months due to the weak USD. Because the exchange rate reached a level that we cannot ignore anymore, we will adjust our USD prices to match the Euro prices. Here are the new USD prices (our Euro prices will stay the same):

License Current Price New Price
SmartInspect Single User $299 $339
SmartInspect 5 User Pack $1,049 $1,199
SmartInspect 10 User Pack $1,999 $2,199
SmartInspect 25 User Pack $4,499 $4,999
SmartInspect 100 User Pack $14,999 $16,999
Additional support year per user $59 $69

The price changes will go live on February 18th (two weeks from now). If you are planning to order SmartInspect in the coming weeks, this would be a good chance to save some dollars before the new prices come into effect.

Since you are using ShareIt it should not be a problem if you would just price your products in Euros. ShareIt will make the conversion to USD according current rates to customers interested in paying in dollars.
At first I did not understand you at all to increase your USD prices until I realized you are not a US based company.
Maybe it is a better idea to lower your price in Euros for your US customers than to increase the price in USD for EU customers?

    Hi Ger,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, we could use ShareIt’s built-in conversion system and just price our products in Euros. However, we want to have “nice looking” prices for both USD and Euros and that’s why we have custom prices for both currencies.

About lowering the Euro prices instead of increasing the USD prices: most of the costs we have are in Euros (office rent, salaries, dedicated hosting server, phone and internet fees and so on) and that’s why decided to increase the USD price. I’m pretty sure that most non-US companies that are selling internationally will increase USD prices soon, if they haven’t already.

    Dennis,

Sorry, I fogot the smiley after the last phrase ;-)

You are absolutely right. We loose money if we do not increase USD price tags. Otoh it is a huge market we cannot afford to loose by a too high price level. Our competitors living in the US do not have the problem we currently face, on the contrary, they can sell their products to the EU market for USD prices.

I wonder if it is not possible to make a price list on the web site that has two columns, one for Euros and one for dollars as you have, and then dynamically update the USD column with the dollar rate as per ShareIt.

This could be easily implemented I guess when they offered a webservice that delivers the current rate they are calculationg with.

Yes, the US market is very important to us. However, in the long run, most US businesses will have to increase their prices too, as the inflation caused by the weak USD will make goods more expensive. Anyway, SmartInspect is still more affordable than other commercial logging tools that have less features and/or are harder to use, so the price is still very competitive in my opinion.

About the Shareit conversion price on our website: as we are actually planning to drop ShareIt in favor of our own merchant account later this year, I don’t worry about this a lot. :-)

FYI: The pricing shown on the right side of the following link does not reflect your new USD pricing. http://www.gurock.com/products/smartinspect/features/

Good catch, thanks a lot for the comment. I just fixed it.

I just found this price change info today. Why didn’t you post this announcement in the Borland Delphi 3rd Party Tools newsgroup? Arrrrg!

Not only do I feel like I’ve been screwed out of an opportunity, I think you guys probably lost potential sales.

    Hello Jay,

Thanks a lot for your comment. You are absolutely right, we failed to post this in the Delphi newsgroups. Sorry for this. I think we included it on http://www.delphifeeds.com/ but I know that not all Delphi users are aware of this website.
