Software piracy

If you are a .NET, Java or Delphi developer, make sure to take a look at our advanced logging tool SmartInspect.

It hit us too. Since Sunday, there’s a crack for the SmartInspect trial which removes the time limit. We noticed the crack due to increased website traffic and suspicious referers in our web statistics. It has only been a matter of time, since our protection isn’t very strong. We decided to focus on quality and features instead of trying to fight a hopeless battle against the cracker scene.

It’s sad to see your software cracked. We’ve put nearly two years of hard work into the development of the initial SmartInspect version and a single weekend is enough to put the entire process in question. However, the good news is that a cracked trial Console isn’t really helpful at all. In order to make real use of SmartInspect, you normally ship one of the SmartInspect libraries with your software and I doubt that many companies will ship pirated software.

As a side note, an important difference is the included source code of the libraries in the full SmartInspect Professional version. Because only the trial has been cracked and not our full version (which is available only for customers), the source code hasn’t been leaked.

I’m sorry to hear that. When I’ve had stuff cracked in the past, it doesn’t make you feel warm and fuzzy. Try to think that, actually, most of those who will use the cracked version wouldn’t have bought it in the first place - I think it’s mostly true.

Don’t put the whole process in question, I think you are doing a great job.

    Good luck and cheer up!

Thanks J. It’s nice to hear such kind words. I hope you are right with your assumption. Well, who knows, maybe some of the users of the cracked version even become real customers.
